All of the excitement around this bike has the team thinking we need to bring back the Monster Challenge this year... Any interest?

Check out our 2009 MonsterArt Submission. We took 9th place worldwide for our paint design (says "desmo" in artist interpretation/overlay), with gold/lime green flake, desmo orange (red), and flat black. Of course, with no budget and a donor bike (Thx N. CO Euro Moto) we had to be a little careful not to massacre.
Either way- bring on the Monster Contests!! The Monstercedici in Indy 2009 was a great motivator!! Arrick this is coming along very well! Head start- NO FAIR~!

Here is the link to all of the 2009 Monster Art club entries: http://www.monsterartcontest.ducati.it/jspcontest/scheda.jsp?id=29

Definitely interested! Only this time it must be more than simply "art" - paint schemes are just paint!

I remember my first Monster Challenge:
I skipped a few days of college classes and flew to Dallas TX from SC to pick up a 06 Monster S4R and ride it 1,100 miles back home when I was passing by the Barber Motorsports park outside Birmingham AL, and decided to stop in and see the museum.
Luck would have it that they let me onto the grounds for free because I rode up on a tricked out Monster and the security thought I was part of the Monster Challenge, (which I never actually had heard of before), but I didn't argue and I certainly enjoyed drooling over a dozen of the coolest monsters I'd ever seen for a couple hours.
Anyhow, god yes - bring it back!

Would have to be more than the last one... paint and only new Ducati Parts on new Monsters left too many great bikes out.

@Arrick wasn't the last Monster Challenge limited to amateurs only?

As it should be Amateurs only. Pros have too much time and too many resources. I wouldn't even consider trying if I knew pros were participating.

I dunno man - if I'm up against the kinds of Monster "builds" the pro's at OCC put out, I'm not so concerned! [laugh laugh laugh]

From a marketing standpoint I can't see any reason not to have a Ducati focussed monster build competition. It's a great way to get your customers more involved in the marque while generating free visual content to spread around the web (through social media outlets, etc). I think at this point in time there's enough 696/796/1100 owners out there to have the competition focussed on the new monster. I wouldn't bar professionals/dealers from the competition but I would create an amateur-only category.

Resources yes, I have to agree on that one. Time is something I don't have. Keep in mind that if it's a peoples choice voting system, anything goes. You never know what the crowd will like. I have been a runner-up to many an amateur builder in the past. I compete in these shows meet new people and get their feedback what I do , as well as getting to see great bikes and have a good time doing it!
Zofunny's bike took 9 months to build. So if this were to be a 2011 Monster Challenge we would be lucky to even get half that time. Not to mention I would have to locate a donor bike first.
I think a Professional class separate from the Amateur class would be the only fair thing to do.
Sound like it should be a lot of fun for everyone!!

Remember the 2006 winner?? Not sure if it was unlimited time or resources, but it was definitely a crowd favorite!!

That's Steve Metzs Tiger Bike, I saw it at the finals in Barber (though in a slightly less tricked out form) and had to vote for it. It's still one of the coolest Monsters I've ever seen - it's totally original, and never to be forgotten.

If I am a pro bike builder, this world has gone crazy, and since it's hard to:
A - Define a Pro.
B - Delineate between a bike built by a pro, or an amateur.
and
C - Make sure a "Pro" doesn't make a bike for some "amateur" who then enters it in as his own.
I would just make it an open competition. If there are to be classes, I would think:
1 - Best of the old,
2 - Best of the new,
3 - Best overall.
4 - Peoples Choice.

Agreed Randy, I think a compeition with four catagories would be great.

Randy,I agree with what you are saying. It would be hard to determine if an amateur has actually built their bike or payed someone to build it. At the same time it would be hard for a small shop just starting out to compete with well known builders that have the resources and sponsorship that they do.I would be in no matter how the we decide to do this. as long as we are all having fun.Unless there is a large cash prize... at that point I will bring these out again, stuff ballot boxes with pre-filled entries, and sabotage any bike that resembles a cuddly animal ;)

To me, a MonsterBuild contest would have to have anyone directly associated with Ducati not able to compete to make this fair. Why? because their resources are different than others. They could 'borrow' Ducati Performance parts for the show, then take them back off and sell them or sell the bike at a markup price. Only a titled bike should be able to enter to ensure fairness.
As far as categories, it should go by motors since most starting points on stock equipment vary with the motor size.
A. <900 2V
B. 900+ 2V
C. 4V
D. Overall
E. People's Choice

i think their should be 3 categories
one for pros and dealers
one for amateurs
and one with both competing.
But more then just pain this time.

Pre 696/796/1100 Monsters have had their day. I have yet to see a truly interesting, properly "modified" new Monster with more than just bolt on bits and paint. The main frame should be the only prerequisite to remain on the bike, but it should be able to be modified. Otherwise everything should be completely open including engines. A creative, resourceful individual or team could come up with a pretty neat machine by the end of this summer. Differentiating between "pros" and "amateurs" is futile, it should be wide open. If you hold the title/registration to that frame, you deserve to enter it regardless of who you are and what your affiliations are.
